Scientists analyzed samples collected near a decommissioned uranium mine site located on the tribal lands of the Spokane Indian Reservation. Although the mine has been decommissioned for over forty years, local tribe members are concerned about the mine’s potential long-term health and environmental impacts. Scientists collected samples of surface water, sediments, and vegetation, and tested the tissue of various small mammals and fish living in and around a creek lying adjacent to the mine. The radiochemistry data was then assessed to determine if elevated levels of radioactivity and heavy metals were present.
